Our Second Opinion

on November 6, 2015

I can’t seem to wrap my head around today’s visit to another clinic for a second opinion. The office was straight out of the 90’s which I’m fine with. It’s nice to know my money isn’t going to furnishing your posh office space. The staff was all very friendly. We went back to the doctors office which we could tell was solely his meaning he doesn’t share with others due to travel. It was well lived in. He was such a down to earth man who sat with us, not behind a desk. He asked to see a picture of our son and that really was telling for me. He didn’t bash the other clinic and in some aspects defended them. But here’s where I, and the hubs, get lost. After discussing our history and our three losses he said he doesn’t feel we should’ve done a second ivf cycle, that we obviously can get pregnant on our own (he called me a fertile myrtle at one point). He thinks it would be worth trying a few medicated cycles before jumping the gun. He says the hubs morphology is actually pretty good which we should be able to conceive. We met with his nurse when we were done (another thing I like is the nurses are tied to just one doctor) and she was so kind and helpful. She hugged me when we left which is so different from the pat on the back I’ve gotten from my old nurse. So I’m lost. We were basically told at our old clinic we couldn’t unless we did ivf with icsi. We’re out of insurance so this medicated cycle sounds nice but doing a few would be half the cost of an ivf cycle. They said if we decided to go ahead and do an iui cycle it we could start at the beginning of my next cycle (which would be the end of this month) and I’d only need an HSG which is not nearly the amount of hoops we’ve had to jump through for our old clinic (testing was getting out of control). Writing this is helping me see things a little more clearly but I think the hubs and I are still feeling a little indecisive at the moment.

  1. Wow. Such conflicting opinions. What does your gut say?

Do the clinics publish pregnancy results? That might help. Good luck with your decision!

  3. This sounds like us when we made the switch from one clinic to another. It was confusing at first but having a second opinion helped us figure out what to do next. I hope it will all be clear to you soon. 🙂

This sounds very familiar! We have been told conflicting info on D’s sperm level (count, motility, morphology all of it). Some say it good some say it’s terrible and ICSI is the only option for us. Of course I also have plenty of issues as well but we did try an IUI before this last round of IVF. While it clearly didn’t work, in so many ways it did work! It showed me that I love that clinic and it showed me that I really did want to keep trying to get pregnant. Sometimes I think those things are just as important as anything else. Good luck! Don’t rush the decision and go with your gut!

That’s a fantastic way to look at it. I know it’s just a way to play to your patients heart strings but he kept saying, “if you were my daughter…” Made me think about why he’s there. It seems to be for the right reasons vs the other clinic.
